Apr 01 (NHK) - The Japan Tourism Agency says the number of overnight stays by foreign guests in February was 40.4 percent lower than in the same month last year.
Preliminary data from the agency shows there were 4.92 million stays by international guests at hotels or other accommodation.
It is the first time Japan saw a 40 percent drop since just after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
The overall occupancy rate across Japan was 53 percent. That's down eight percentage points from a year earlier.
