May 16 (NHK) - Japan's health authorities reported 46 new cases of coronavirus infection and 14 deaths on Friday.
The number of confirmed infections in Japan stands at 16,249.
There are an additional 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which was quarantined in Yokohama. This brings the total to 16,961.
The country's death toll stands at 740, including 13 from the cruise ship.
By prefecture, Tokyo tops the list with 5,036 cases, followed by Osaka with 1,768 and Kanagawa with 1,249.
Officials say there have been 315 confirmed cases at airport quarantine stations and other points of entry.
Fourteen cases were found among those who returned from China on government-chartered planes.
Health officials say 241 people remain in serious condition, including four from the Diamond Princess, as of Friday.
A total of 11,462 people, including 653 from the Diamond Princess, have recovered and left hospital.
