Escaping racehorse swims across canal in Tokyo

Jun 21, 2020 (NHK) - A racehorse escaping from a racetrack in Tokyo fell into a nearby canal and swam to the opposite shore before being captured.

The website of Tokyo City Keiba in Shinagawa Ward reports that a racehorse called Sardana ran away during training on Saturday morning.

The horse jumped a storm surge barrier adjacent to the stables and fell into the Keihin Canal.

It was secured by stable staff on the other side of the canal. No one was injured.

A passerby in his 30s said he was surprised to see a horse being helped out of the water.

It was the second escape of a horse at the racecourse in less than a month. Another horse escaped from the racetrack and ran into a vehicle in late May.

Race officials issued a comment on the website, saying that they will look into the cause and seek to prevent a recurrence.
