JAL posts big quarterly loss

Aug 04 (NHK) - Japan Airlines has posted a big net loss for the April-June quarter, as the coronavirus pandemic continues to devastate the global aviation industry.

The JAL group says it suffered a net loss of 93.7 billion yen, or about 885 million dollars, for the quarter. The company posted a net profit of 12.9 billion yen for the same period last year.

JAL says the loss is due to travel restrictions put in place around the world, which have led to a sharp reduction in passengers.

The company has suspended about 90 percent of its international flights, and 20 percent of its domestic ones.

The company did not release its earnings forecast for the business year through next March, saying the pandemic has made it difficult to make projections.
