Tokyo confirms 148 new cases of coronavirus

Aug 31, 2020 (NHK) - Tokyo's daily tally of infections of the new coronavirus has fallen below 200 for the first time since Tuesday.

The Tokyo Metropolitan government announced 148 new cases on Sunday. Two people were confirmed to have died.

In the southern prefecture of Okinawa, a typhoon is approaching. Authorities are concerned that evacuation centers may become crowded, raising the risk of infection.

Residents are being advised to consider staying at the homes of relatives or accommodation facilities if they need to evacuate.

Across Japan over 68,000 cases have been confirmed. Nearly 1,300 people have died.
