Mar 19 (NHK) - Universal Studios Japan has opened a hotly anticipated theme park zone featuring the Nintendo character Mario. The launch comes 8 months later than planned as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
"Super Nintendo World" opened in Osaka on Thursday.
Attractions include a Mario Kart-inspired ride that uses augmented reality technology. There's also a cafe.
The CEO of the operator is banking on the site to be a big draw for tourists.
J.L. Bonnier said, "I think once international students start coming back, once it's more easy to travel in Japan itself, I think we'll become the economic engine for the Kansai region."
