Jun 23 (NHK) - A volcanic eruption has occurred on an island in the southwestern Japanese prefecture of Kagoshima.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the eruption took place on Suwanosejima at around 0:04 a.m. on Wednesday.
Officials said the explosive eruption hurled large rocks a distance of nearly 1 kilometer from the Otake crater.
The agency raised its volcanic alert level from 2 to 3 on its five-tier scale. They are warning about the possibility of large rocks falling on areas within about 2 kilometers of the crater.
Suwanosejima has experienced occasional volcanic activities. Its alert level was raised to 3 in December 2020, and in March this year, after eruptions sent large rocks about 1 kilometer from the crater.
