Jul 08 (CNA) - Another setback for the Tokyo Olympics. The torch relay in the capital has been scrapped over COVID-19 concerns.
It was set to begin on July 9 and last for 14 days. Relay events in Tokyo will be replaced with closed-door flame lighting ceremonies, which will be live-streamed online. The latest blow comes less than three weeks before the Games kick off. Local reports said the government plans to impose a state of emergency in Tokyo throughout the Olympics, which would effectively mean spectators are barred and the Games would be held behind closed doors.
