Jan 17 (NHK) - Japanese golfer Matsuyama Hideki has clinched his eighth PGA victory, beating his own record for the most tour wins by a Japanese male player.
The final round of the Sony Open in Hawaii took place on Sunday.
Matsuyama started the day in second place at 16 under par.
Matsuyama birdied the 15th hole, putting him one stroke behind the leader, Russell Henley of the United States.
He made another birdie on the 18th, and finished tied with Henley at 23-under.
On the par-5 first hole of a playoff, Matsuyama sank an eagle putt after a superb second shot and won the tournament.
He gained his seventh PGA tour victory in the Zozo Championship held in Japan last October.
