Japan to raise daily cap on arrivals to 10,000

Apr 01, 2022 (NHK) - The Japanese government has decided to raise the daily cap on the number of arrivals to 10,000 on April 10. The figure includes Japanese and foreign nationals.

The cap was previously raised from 5,000 a day to the current 7,000 on March 14. Officials have since been studying whether it is possible to further ease the limit by beefing up coronavirus quarantine controls.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu told reporters on Friday that the higher ceiling is designed to cater to the needs of Japanese expatriates planning to return home, and foreign nationals -- including students -- wishing to enter the country.

Matsuno said the government will continue to review its border control measures, by monitoring infection trends at home and abroad and major countries' travel restrictions. He said Japan hopes to increase the inflow and outflow of people in stages.
