Japan's Princess Kako departs for Peru

Nov 01, 2023 (NHK) - Princess Kako departed Japan on Wednesday for Peru, where she will attend events marking the 150 years of diplomatic ties between the countries. She is the second daughter of Crown Prince and Princess Akishino.

The princess waved to people at Tokyo's Haneda Airport and spoke with Imperial Household Agency officials before boarding a commercial flight. This is her second official overseas trip, having visited Austria and Hungary in 2019.

Princess Kako will meet Peruvian President Dina Boluarte in the capital Lima. She will also attend a welcome lunch and give a speech at a commemoration ceremony marking the establishment of diplomatic relations.

There are about 150,000 people with Japanese ancestry in Peru, the third-largest such community overseas. During her stay, the princess will meet some of them.

She also plans to visit the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Cusco, southern Peru.

Princess Kako will return to Japan on November 10.
