TOKYO, Nov 27 (NHK) - Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group has announced the death of its President and Group CEO. Ohta Jun was 65 and had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Ohta started working at the former Sumitomo Bank in 1982. He was in charge of project finance and developed the operations into a prime source of earnings.
After becoming CEO in 2019, he focused on digitalization. Ohta started a smartphone app service in March that unified online banking, credit card and securities functions.
He strengthened ties with other companies and formed a capital and business alliance with major online financial services provider SBI Group.
Even after his cancer diagnosis, Ohta continued working while undergoing treatment. He died on Saturday.
