Japan's Empress Emerita Michiko turns 90

Oct 20 (News On Japan) - Japan's Empress Emerita Michiko turned 90 years old on Sunday, and attended celebrations at her residence.

Her birthday events were downsized as part of preventive measures against infectious diseases. But she received more guests than last year.

In the morning, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, as well as their daughter, Princess Aiko, visited the residence of Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko at the Akasaka Estate.

They met together for the first time since Empress Emerita Michiko was discharged from a hospital a week ago, after she had surgery for a broken leg.

The Imperial Household Agency said her prognosis is good. It said she uses a wheelchair in her daily life and has over an hour of rehabilitation each day, including walking exercises.

Crown Prince and Princess Akishino, as well as their son, Prince Hisahito, also visited the residence to celebrate her birthday.
