HOKKAIDO, Dec 06 (News On Japan) - In the early hours of today, around 1 a.m., a green streak of light was observed in northern Hokkaido, specifically in Monbetsu City. At the same time, the phenomenon was also recorded in Shihoro Town, Tokachi region, and by a car’s dashcam in Kitami City in the eastern part of Hokkaido.
What exactly was this bright light, which was seen over a wide area of Hokkaido? At a science museum in Sapporo, experts provided some insights.
Yusuke Otaki, Sapporo Youth Science Museum:
“This is likely a fireball, a particularly bright type of meteor.”
The light was identified as a "fireball," a rare type of meteor that emits a bright glow as it collides with Earth's atmosphere. Such events are seldom captured on camera.
