KYOTO, Jul 23 (News On Japan) - In Ujitawara, a town in Kyoto Prefecture, residents are facing an unusual problem: monkeys are repeatedly snatching side mirrors from parked cars. The bizarre incidents began around the end of last year and have now surged to around 150 reported cases.
To investigate why these monkeys are targeting car mirrors, a zoo that has long experience with primate care conducted a simple experiment. They installed mirrors in the enclosure to observe the animals’ behavior.
The results shed light on the mystery, revealing the monkeys' strong interest in their own reflections as a likely factor.
Holding onto a mirror, the monkey mystery is slowly being unraveled.
