HOKKAIDO, Aug 21 (News On Japan) - Three people living in Hokkaido, including a restaurant operator from Niseko, have been arrested and indicted at New Chitose Airport for attempting to import cannabis seeds.
The suspects were charged under the Cannabis Control Act. Among them is Ryo Moroyuu, 33, who runs a restaurant in Niseko.
According to investigators, the three conspired to bring 37 viable cannabis seeds into Japan from Thailand on June 5th. The seeds, packaged in a stylish container, were hidden inside the pocket of swimwear placed in their luggage.
Despite the attempt at concealment, the seeds were discovered during customs inspection by a drug detection dog at New Chitose Airport.
While their pleas have not been disclosed, the suspects reportedly told investigators that they purchased 40 seeds at a cannabis shop in Thailand for about 47,000 yen.
