NAGOYA, Aug 27 (News On Japan) - A statue of Toyotomi Hideyoshi at the entrance to a shopping street in Nagoya’s Nishi Ward was found with its head broken off on August 23, according to people connected with the association. The reinforced-plastic head was discovered on the ground nearby.
The Hideyoshi figure was installed 12 years ago alongside statues of Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu, but the area has seen repeated vandalism. In 2019, the Nobunaga statue’s left arm was torn off, and in 2022 the Ieyasu statue was knocked from its base.
The head is being kept in storage by a member of the shopping street’s board. With the perpetrator unknown as of August 23, the shopping district promotion association is considering filing a criminal damage report.
