Kitakyushu, Aug 28, 2025 (News On Japan) - A 4-year-old boy was bitten by a redback spider at a daycare facility in Kitakyushu’s Tobata Ward on August 25 after a child at the center had found a female redback spider in the playground that morning, placed it in a bug cage, and set the cage on top of a shoe rack.
Later, a boy who arrived with a guardian reached into the cage and was bitten on the tip of his right middle finger. He reported mild pain; by August 26 the pain had subsided and he had no symptoms.
Public health center staff inspected the surrounding area, discovered one female and two juvenile redback spiders, and exterminated them immediately. The city advises that anyone bitten should wash the affected area with warm water or soapy water and seek medical attention as soon as possible.
