Pleasure Boat Runs Aground Near Haneda Airport

TOKYO - Nine people were injured, including two seriously, after a pleasure boat carrying 10 people ran aground near the mouth of the Tama River close to Haneda Airport on the evening of August 24.

Emergency services received a series of calls shortly after 7 p.m. reporting that a boat had run aground near Haneda Airport in Tokyo's Ota Ward.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department and the Japan Coast Guard, the pleasure boat struck a concrete barrier near Ukishimacho in Kawasaki Ward, Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, before riding up onto a rocky area.

Nine men and women in their 20s to 50s were injured in the accident, including two who suffered serious injuries. All were conscious.

The boat had departed from Yumenoshima in Tokyo's Koto Ward and is believed to have been heading to Yokohama Port, where a fireworks display was being held, when it ran aground.
