HOKKAIDO - A 23-year-old man died after his car overturned and was badly damaged in Nemuro, Hokkaido, early on August 24, with police investigating whether the vehicle may have collided with a brown bear or another wild animal after black fur was found attached to the wreckage.
Police received a report from a passing motorist in the early hours of August 24 that a vehicle had overturned beside the road.
The accident occurred on a straight section of road with two lanes in each direction separated by a central median.
The driver, a man in his 20s, was rescued from the vehicle but was later confirmed dead.
Police believe the passenger car overturned after striking the central median.
The area around the accident site is known for frequent sightings of brown bears and other wild animals.
Black fur believed to have come from an animal was found attached to a damaged section of the overturned vehicle, raising the possibility that the car had struck wildlife before crashing.
