MIE - A large fire that swept through a shopping district near Ise Jingu in Mie Prefecture was extinguished at 11 a.m. on September 2, about 44 hours after it broke out, after damaging 58 buildings across an area of approximately 4,300 square meters.
The fire began on August 31 at the Meirin shopping district in Ise, Mie Prefecture, and spread across the surrounding area, affecting shops as well as nearby homes.
Firefighters continued working through the night for two days before declaring the blaze extinguished at 11 a.m. on September 2.
Police and fire officials are focusing their investigation near the entrance to the shopping district following eyewitness reports that flames had been seen coming from that area.
Ise city also opened a consultation desk at city hall on September 2 to assist people affected by the fire. Shop owners and others visited to apply for the reissuance of identification documents, including My Number cards, as well as certificates confirming damage from the fire.
