OSAKA - A 52-year-old restaurant operator was sentenced to 17 years in prison on September 4 for killing his former girlfriend by repeatedly stabbing her in the abdomen and back with two kitchen knives at his home in Higashiosaka, Osaka Prefecture.

The Osaka District Court handed down the sentence to Hiroshi Nagahisa, who was charged with murdering his former girlfriend, Arisa Sato, 33, in October 2025.

Nagahisa had admitted to the charge during his lay judge trial.

Prosecutors sought an 18-year prison sentence, arguing that the killing was carried out with a firm intent to murder, citing more than 60 wounds found on Sato's body.

In its ruling on September 4, the court described the attack as "a brutal crime in which the central parts of the body were repeatedly stabbed."

Nagahisa surrendered to authorities after the killing, but the court said he could not be considered to have turned himself in out of genuine remorse.

The court sentenced him to 17 years in prison.
