Japan's Population Aged 100 or Older Tops 100,000 for First Time

TOKYO - The number of people aged 100 or older in Japan has exceeded 100,000 for the first time, reaching a record 107,677 as of September 1, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

The total increased by 7,914 from the previous year, marking the 56th consecutive year in which Japan's centenarian population has reached a record high.

Women accounted for 94,298, or nearly 88% of the total, while 13,379 were men.

Japan's oldest person is Fuyo Kishimoto, a 114-year-old woman living in Kyoto Prefecture. The country's oldest man is Hikaru Kato, 112, who lives in Kumamoto Prefecture.

The number of people aged 100 or older surpassed 50,000 in 2012 and has roughly doubled over the past 14 years.
