NAGOYA - Japan secured a place in the women’s soccer quarterfinals at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with one group-stage match remaining after overwhelming Vietnam 8-0 for its second consecutive victory.
The defending champion, seeking a third straight Asian Games title, moved to six points after two matches in Group E.
Japan scored repeatedly from the first half, with Hiroshima’s China Kamiya contributing two goals in the emphatic victory.
Taiwan also reached six points after edging Thailand, ensuring that both Japan and Taiwan will finish in the top two positions in the group and advance to the quarterfinals.
Vietnam and Thailand remain without a point.
