Japan's Biggest Products of 2026 Revealed

TOKYO - Japan's top 30 hit products of 2026 were announced on November 3rd by Nikkei Trendy, highlighting a growing trend toward "pocket consumption," as consumers facing rising prices increasingly seek affordable products that deliver satisfaction, convenience and enjoyable experiences without putting a strain on household budgets.

The annual ranking evaluates products and services based on three criteria: sales performance, originality and market influence, offering a snapshot of changing consumer preferences across Japan.

Among this year's selections was pickleball, a racket sport that has seen its player population surge sevenfold from 2025 to approximately 330,000 in 2026. Kirin Good Ale also made the list, benefiting from changes to Japan's liquor tax system and attracting consumers seeking small, affordable indulgences.

The defining theme of 2026 was "pocket consumption," reflecting a growing willingness to spend on inexpensive products that provide a sense of enjoyment or reward despite continued inflation.

Noboru Sawahara, editor-in-chief of Nikkei Trendy, said consumers had become increasingly cautious about spending. "With inflation continuing, people have tightened their purse strings, and I think this was a year when a great many consumers turned to these kinds of products," he said.

Ranked 24th were Korean mega-size coffee chains, which first entered the Japanese market in 2025. Offering large drinks at relatively low prices, the chains have attracted attention with their approximately one-liter large-size coffees priced at just 400 yen.

In 17th place was Del Monte Puree Fruit, a fruit-based product that became popular during the summer as a convenient, edible alternative to ice packs. Approximately 5 million units were shipped, demonstrating strong demand for products combining refreshment with practical convenience.

Toy digital cameras, known as "Toy Digi," ranked ninth. Despite their relatively basic specifications, the inexpensive cameras have gained popularity for producing distinctive photographs that appeal to social media users, showing that consumers increasingly value the experience and creative possibilities of a product over technical performance.

The third-place product was Bonbon Drop Stickers, three-dimensional decorative stickers whose raised, colorful appearance has attracted both children and adults.

TikTok Shop ranked second as shopping directly through recommendations within the social media app became more widespread. An increasing number of companies have opened stores on the platform, reflecting the growing influence of social media on purchasing decisions and the expansion of shopping experiences integrated with entertainment.

Taking first place was "Mejirushi Charms," small decorative accessories that can be attached to umbrellas, plastic bottle holders and other personal belongings to make them easily identifiable.

The charms have become particularly popular among fans engaging in "oshi-katsu," the Japanese practice of supporting favorite idols, characters or celebrities through merchandise purchases and related activities. Their popularity has also helped drive growth in the capsule toy market, where inexpensive collectible accessories continue to attract consumers.

The ranking suggests that even as inflation weighs on household spending, Japanese consumers remain willing to purchase affordable products that offer personal enjoyment, practical benefits or opportunities for self-expression.

Nikkei Trendy also released its predictions for products and services likely to become hits in 2027.

Among the selections were Muse Charm, a palm-sized artificial intelligence device, and fresh food crane games, which combine the entertainment of arcade prize machines with the opportunity to win fresh food products.

Topping the 2027 forecast was World ID, a digital identity verification technology designed to establish that an online user is a real human rather than an artificial intelligence system or automated bot.

The technology uses information derived from the iris of a person's eye to issue a digital identity that can be used to verify human status online.

With advances in artificial intelligence making fabricated videos, manipulated images and other forms of digital deception increasingly difficult to detect, technologies capable of distinguishing real people from AI-generated identities are expected to attract growing attention.

The contrast between the 2026 rankings and the outlook for 2027 highlights two emerging directions in consumer demand: affordable everyday enjoyment and new technologies addressing the challenges of an increasingly digital society.
