Jul 19 (NHK) - The main stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, now under construction, has been shown to media 2 years ahead of the games' opening.
The new national stadium in central Tokyo is scheduled to be completed by the end of November next year. The construction period has passed the halfway mark.
The stadium is to host the opening and closing ceremonies of the Tokyo Games and track and field events.
It will have 5 stories above ground and 2 below. The entire structure of its 3-layered stands is now visible.
The stadium is to have about 60,000 seats. Its roof will use steel frames and domestic timber, and protrude about 60 meters toward the field.
About 2,000 people are working at the site. The operator says it is taking precautionary measures against intense heat, including providing sports drinks and having a nurse on duty at all times.
A senior official at the Japan Sport Council says he hopes the stadium will provide a comfortable environment for athletes and promote Japan to people from around the world.
