KYOTO, Aug 02 (News On Japan) - In Kyoto’s Gion district, geiko and maiko are visiting those who have supported them as part of the tradition known as Hassaku.
Hassaku refers to the first day of the eighth month in the old lunar calendar. Historically, it was a day when farmers would pray for a good harvest and offer gifts to those they were indebted to.
In Gion, there is a custom of making courtesy calls on August 1st in the new calendar. Geiko and maiko visit teahouses and greet their masters in the arts.
‘Congratulations. Please look after us.’
Kyoto experienced its eighth consecutive day of extreme heat on Thursday. Despite the harsh conditions, geiko and maiko, dressed in white makeup and black crested kimonos, made their rounds, expressing their gratitude.
