OITA, Jan 05 (News On Japan) - Various traditional events marking the New Year were held across the country. In Bungotakada City, Oita Prefecture, the ‘Horanyenya’ festival, in which boats are rowed to rhythmic chants, took place.
The ‘Horanyenya’ festival, believed to have started in the mid-Edo period, was originally held to pray for the safety of rice transport boats and bountiful catches.
Spectators cheered as rowers, dressed only in loincloths, dived into the river to receive celebratory offerings from the crowd.
Additionally, red-and-white rice cakes were thrown from the boats to bring good fortune for the year.
In Nagoya City, 245 participants, ranging in age from middle school students to 85-year-olds, gathered at a local shrine for the traditional ‘First Archery’ ceremony.
Participants prayed for their improvement in archery as they shot their first arrows of the new year.
