KYOTO, Jan 12 (News On Japan) - At Kyoto’s Sanjusangendo, newly recognized 20-year-old adults gathered to demonstrate their archery skills during the annual "Toshiya" event.
The tradition is believed to have begun in the Kamakura period, when samurai competed by shooting arrows under the temple’s eaves, aiming to hit as many targets as possible within a day. Today, it has evolved into a national archery competition.
Participants, dressed in vibrant traditional attire, shot arrows with determination toward a target located 60 meters away.
One participant said: "I drew the bow with the spirit of forging my own future."
Another expressed gratitude: "I am truly thankful to my parents, who wholeheartedly support my archery practice."
This year, approximately 1,600 people took part, each renewing their personal resolve for the future.
