Two Girls Found With Fake Student IDs in Kabukicho

TOKYO - Tokyo police have found that two teenage girls detained during coordinated patrols in the "Toyoko" area of Kabukicho were carrying forged student identification cards containing false ages and names.

A total of 39 boys and girls aged 14 to 19 were taken into protective custody during patrols in the Toyoko area on August 29 and September 5 for reasons including drug abuse and being out late at night.

It was subsequently learned that a 14-year-old girl living in Tokyo and a 17-year-old girl from Kanagawa Prefecture were carrying student IDs that had been falsified with different ages, names and other personal information.

Investigators believe the IDs may have been intended to allow the girls to enter so-called men's concept cafes.

One of the girls reportedly told police that the student ID had been "given to me."

The Metropolitan Police Department is urging caution, warning that there are cases in which "malicious adults draw young people into crime."
