Couple's Gardening Hobby Turns Out to Be Cannabis Cultivation

KAGOSHIMA - A married couple in Aira, Kagoshima Prefecture, have been arrested after police discovered cannabis plants growing in pots on the terrace of their home during a search connected to a separate investigation, authorities said on October 28th.

The suspects were identified as 61-year-old barber Toru Kondo and his 56-year-old wife, Yuko Kondo, who works at a clothing store.

Several potted plants had been arranged on the terrace of the couple's residence, giving the appearance of an ordinary home gardening hobby. However, the plants were cannabis, which the couple are suspected of cultivating illegally.

Among the items seized by police were flowerpots, liquid fertilizer, a watering can and a spray bottle. Although the equipment appeared to be typical gardening supplies, investigators believe it had been used to grow cannabis.

The alleged cultivation came to light on October 6th, when police searched the couple's home as part of an investigation into an unrelated case. Officers discovered the cannabis plants during the search, leading to the couple's arrest.
