Wind chimes welcome visitors to Kyoto's Heian Jingu Shrine

Jul 14 (NHK) - In Kyoto, the soothing sounds of about 1,000 wind chimes at Heian Jingu Shrine are giving visitors relief from the summer heat.

The chimes were hung up on July 1 in the shrine's vermillion-painted hallway.

It is said that the sound of wind chimes wards off disease. So the shrine decided to put them up for the first time this year with the hope of bringing the coronavirus under control.

The glass chimes hang at 10-centimeter intervals.

Visitors can write their wishes on paper strips and attach them to the chimes.

The chimes can be enjoyed through August 31.
