Multiple 'Monkey Sightings' in Downtown Kyoto

KYOTO, Jan 22 (News On Japan) - A monkey was caught on video Saturday in Kyoto's bustling downtown area of Shijo-Kawaramachi amid multiple reports of "monkey sightings".

According to Kyoto Prefectural Police, between approximately 10 AM and 4 PM on January 20, there were six reports from pedestrians in Kyoto's downtown area stating that there were monkeys roaming.

These reports extended from Sanjo to Shijo along Kawaramachi in Kyoto, and there were also sightings reported from Teramachi Street's Kyogoku shopping arcade, popular among tourists.

One witness who spotted a monkey near Shijo-Kawaramachi said, "It climbed up a traffic signal, then onto the roof of Takashimaya department store, crossed the pedestrian crossing, and disappeared onto the sidewalk. It seemed quite casual."

There have been no reports of any damage caused by the monkeys, but police are urging caution, stating, "Please be careful as monkeys were seen in the area."
