TOKYO, Jul 28 (News On Japan) - The first Japan Women's Go League opened at the Nihon Ki-in in Tokyo on July 27th. Established as a commemorative project for the 100th anniversary of the Nihon Ki-in, this league features female players divided into five teams who compete once a month over the course of a year. This marks the first official team competition in Japan.
Rina Fujisawa, Triple Crown Champion of the Igo Shogi Channel Team, commented, 'I'm frustrated that I lost my match, but I'm happy our team won. This is the beauty of team competitions. I hope this Women's Go League gains momentum and helps the Go community develop, even a little.'
Aisaka Ueno, champion of the Senko Group Team, added, 'I hope people find their favorite teams and that even those who have never watched Go will get interested.'
The top-ranking team will challenge the leading teams from Go powerhouses China and South Korea.
