TOKYO, Sep 01 (News On Japan) - A Tokyo startup that failed to launch its small “Kairos No. 2” rocket from a site in Wakayama Prefecture has disclosed that a malfunctioning sensor was to blame.
Space One, the Tokyo-based venture, attempted the Kairos No. 2 launch in December 2024, but the vehicle deviated from its intended trajectory and the flight was terminated, resulting in a failed mission.
Space One said on August 31 that a sensor designed to detect angular disturbances inside the motor malfunctioned, and it will partially redesign the sensor ahead of the next attempt.
Mamoru Endo, a director at Space One, said the company “will examine how the system functions even when multiple failures occur and move forward with preparations accordingly.”
The timing for the Kairos No. 3 launch will be announced once a schedule is set.
