SAITAMA - Large volumes of floodwater poured into the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel in Kasukabe, Saitama Prefecture, following heavy rain on September 7, prompting the massive underground flood-control facility known as the "Underground Temple" to go into operation.
The Edogawa River Office of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's Kanto Regional Development Bureau released video showing large amounts of water flowing into the facility during the heavy rain.
The underground discharge channel is designed to take in excess water during periods of heavy rainfall, helping reduce flooding in the surrounding area.
