Japan Introduces Personalized Motorcycle License Plates

TOKYO - Motorcycle owners across Japan can now choose their preferred license plate numbers under a new system introduced by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism on October 19th, with popular numbers allocated by lottery and applications costing between 2,500 and 3,000 yen.

The preferred number system has been available for regular passenger cars nationwide since 1999, but motorcycles were previously excluded. The ministry introduced the system for motorcycles following changes to license plate specifications, which will also increase the range of numbers available.

Under the new system, motorcycle owners can select their preferred numbers, although particularly popular combinations, including 1, 7, 8, 88, 777, and 8888, will be allocated through a lottery if demand exceeds availability.

The system also allows owners of motorcycles already registered and in use to change their existing license plate numbers, rather than limiting the service to newly purchased vehicles.

Application fees range from 2,500 to 3,000 yen, including tax, and applicants can expect to receive their new license plates approximately one week after submitting their requests.
