TOKYO, Sep 13 (News On Japan) - Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi has decided to run in the Liberal Democratic Party’s presidential race.
The LDP had vowed to “rebuild from scratch” following its crushing defeat in the Upper House election, yet those seen as potential successors to Shigeru Ishiba are instead busy making courtesy calls to party heavyweights like former Prime Ministers Taro Aso, Yoshihide Suga, and Fumio Kishida.
While Koizumi is preparing to launch his campaign, the focus of other aspirants has shifted to seeking the backing of influential figures within the party, highlighting the enduring influence of the old guard in shaping leadership dynamics.
Meanwhile, Constitutional Democratic Party leader Katsuya Noda commented, "It’s like a losers’ revival match from a year ago," hinting at skepticism over whether any real renewal is underway.
