SHIZUOKA, Oct 27 (News On Japan) - A factory tour offering a close look at Shinkansen maintenance facilities began on October 25th at JR Central’s Hamamatsu Works in Hamamatsu City, drawing large crowds of railway enthusiasts and families. The event, titled “Go to JR Central Hamamatsu Factory,” has been held annually since 2022 to help visitors experience the Shinkansen up close.
This year’s program featured the first-ever demonstration of the N700S model operating on battery power with its pantograph lowered, simulating autonomous movement during a disaster. Participants also witnessed a rare display where the first and sixteenth cars were coupled to form a two-car mini Shinkansen that moved along the track.
One participant commented, “My child plays with model trains in this exact two-car formation, so we said, ‘It looks just like that.’ It’s really interesting and quite rare to see.”
In addition to train demonstrations, various exhibitions related to the Shinkansen were held, giving visitors a full day to enjoy the world of high-speed rail at the Hamamatsu facility.
