TOKYO, Oct 28 (News On Japan) - The Defense Ministry is considering deploying the Self-Defense Forces to Akita Prefecture following a series of bear attacks that have injured residents in recent weeks.
Governor Kenta Suzuki is expected to visit the ministry today to formally request Defense Minister Koizumi’s assistance in bear control operations, including the capture and removal of dangerous animals.
According to ministry officials, the Defense Ministry is reviewing Akita Prefecture’s request and is moving toward dispatching Self-Defense Forces personnel to provide support in affected areas.
The planned deployment would not involve armed troops; instead, SDF members would provide logistical assistance such as transporting materials needed for bear capture and gathering local information.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara said in a press briefing on October 27th that the decision to deploy troops “will be made comprehensively by the minister after receiving the request.” Koizumi is expected to make the final decision based on his meeting with Governor Suzuki and the specifics of the request.
