HYOGO, Mar 29, 2026 (News On Japan) - A traditional cherry blossom viewing event was held at the World Heritage site Himeji Castle on March 28th, as visitors gathered to enjoy the first blooms of the season against the backdrop of the castle’s striking white walls.

Known as one of Japan’s most famous cherry blossom spots, Himeji Castle in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture hosted its 41st annual “Kansakura Festival,” drawing large crowds eager to take in the early signs of spring.

Cherry blossoms beginning to open created a vivid contrast with the castle, often referred to as the White Heron Castle for its bright white exterior.

Around the main keep, many visitors enjoyed hanami by eating boxed lunches while listening to the gentle sounds of traditional koto music.

One visitor said, "I’m really enjoying it. The white of the castle and the cherry blossoms stand out beautifully together."

Approximately 1,000 cherry trees are planted within the castle grounds, which has been selected as one of Japan’s “Top 100 Cherry Blossom Viewing Sites.”

Although the blossoms have only just begun to open, they are expected to reach full bloom in about a week.

Illuminations for nighttime cherry blossom viewing will continue through April 5th, offering visitors a chance to enjoy the scenery after dark.
