TOCHIGI - Four workers were killed after being struck by a limited express train while carrying out vegetation-clearing work on the tracks at Shin-Kanuma Station on the Tobu Nikko Line in Kanuma, Tochigi Prefecture, on August 20.
Emergency services received a call at around 10:50 a.m. reporting that workers had been struck by a train at the station.
According to police, around seven people were carrying out weed-clearing work on the railway tracks when four of them were struck by the limited express train.
A passenger on the train said it came to an abrupt halt shortly after entering the station. "As soon as we entered the station, the emergency brakes were applied. The train stopped suddenly and hasn't moved since," the passenger said.
Fire department officials said the four victims were men believed to be in their 50s and 60s.
All four were unconscious when they were taken to hospital and were later confirmed dead.
Police and other authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
