OSAKA - Osaka's iconic Glico sign in Dotonbori will undergo a major renewal next spring after more than a decade of operation, with its current LED display set to be switched off for the final time on November 30.

The Dotonbori Glico Sign, one of the most recognizable landmarks in Osaka's Minami entertainment district, is currently in its sixth generation, which was installed in October 2014.

According to confectionery maker Ezaki Glico, the existing sign uses more than 140,000 LED lights, many of which have reached the end of their service life after more than 10 years of use. The company decided to renew the display because of the aging lighting equipment.

The current sign will be illuminated for the last time on November 30, with renovation work scheduled to begin in December.

The renewed Glico sign is expected to be unveiled in spring 2027, marking another chapter in the history of one of Osaka's best-known tourist attractions.
