Ohtani has top-selling jersey this MLB season

Oct 01 (NHK) - Major League Baseball says Ohtani Shohei of the Los Angeles Angels has the best-selling jersey in the league this season.

MLB released a list of the 20 most popular player jerseys this season on Friday. It says Ohtani is the first Japanese player to top the list.

Ohtani came out on top for the first time in his career, but has ranked in the top 10 twice before. He ranked eighth in 2018 in his first year in the league and ninth in 2021, when he was awarded MVP of the season.

MLB has not disclosed how many jerseys were totally sold and how much revenue was generated.

In second place is Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Atlanta Braves, who has become the first MLB player in history to achieve 40 home runs and 70 steals in a single season. Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees came in third.

One of Ohtani's teammates, Mike Trout, is among the top 10.

Ten out of the top 20 are from outside the United States. MLB says this season's jersey sales continue to represent the international makeup of the league today.
