Over 200 quakes jolt Tokara Islands

Dec 08, 2021 (NHK) - More than 200 earthquakes have hit southern Japan's Tokara island chain since Saturday.

The Meteorological Agency says quakes have been taking place in the area since shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The number of jolts was 59 on Saturday, 87 on Sunday, 38 on Monday, and 22 through 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, totaling 206. The intensity of tremors ranged from one to four on the Japanese scale of zero to seven.

The strongest was a magnitude 4.9 quake on Sunday at noon, which registered an intensity of four on Akusekijima Island, which is part of Kagoshima Prefecture's Toshima Village.

The water supply was suspended on Akusekijima on Sunday morning. However, local authorities say the service was resumed on Monday afternoon.

No other damage has been reported so far.
