CHIBA - Firefighters battling a house fire in Narita, Chiba Prefecture, on August 19 were forced to contend with large numbers of bees swarming around the scene after an attempt to burn a bee nest apparently set the roof ablaze.
Emergency services received a report from a nearby resident saying that someone had been trying to burn a bee nest when the fire spread to the roof.
When firefighters arrived, they were confronted not only by flames engulfing the building but also by numerous bees flying around the site.
During the firefighting operation, crew members could be seen suddenly ducking and moving away from the insects. Firefighters also appeared to spray the bees with what looked like insecticide while continuing efforts to extinguish the blaze.
The fire started in a building believed to be vacant and spread to a neighboring structure.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control about three and a half hours later.
No injuries were reported from either the fire or the bees.
