Japan's Princess Kako ends official visit to Peru

Nov 10, 2023 (NHK) - Japan's Princess Kako has wound up her official visit to Peru to attend events marking 150 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

On her last day in the South American country on Wednesday, the princess visited a school in the capital Lima. The school was founded 52 years ago by people of Japanese descent to teach the Japanese language and hand down Japanese culture.

Princess Kako smiled as she watched a class of 16 second graders learn Japanese words written in the hiragana alphabet.

She later attended a ceremony at a sports ground to mark the 70th anniversary of a Japanese residents' organization dedicated to nurturing people through sports and culture.

Local people, including those of Japanese ancestry, performed dances for the princess. As she left, she waved to some 1,000 people who had gathered for the event. ...continue reading
