Aug 06 (News On Japan) - The Sendai Tanabata Festival, one of the three major festivals in the Tohoku region, began on the 6th of August in Sendai City. The festival's vibrant streamers and bamboo decorations adorned the shopping streets, with strips of paper bearing citizens' wishes hung everywhere.
This year, many of the wishes prayed for the recovery from the Noto Peninsula earthquake, drawing large crowds of onlookers. The festival, timed with the lunar calendar's July 7th, features about 3,000 streamers in blue and pink, with more than 250 of them exceeding three meters in length. The bamboo decorations were lined with strips of paper and origami cranes, densely packed along the arcade streets. The festival runs until the 8th, with organizers expecting over 2 million visitors.
