NAHA, Aug 12 (News On Japan) - Minamidaitojima, the largest island in the Daitō Islands group 360 kilometers east of Okinawa's main island, is experiencing a gasoline shortage. On August 11th, a sign reading 'No gasoline available' was posted at the island's only gas station, which serves a population of about 1,200.
According to the village office, the gasoline supply ran out on August 8th of this month. The situation arose because the ship that usually delivers gasoline twice a month was undergoing maintenance, resulting in no deliveries for the past month. Additionally, the higher-than-usual demand this year contributed to the shortage.
A woman who runs a restaurant on the island shared her experience: This is the first time I can remember something like this happening. Without gasoline, it's too hot to walk outside, so we're trying not to use our cars. Naturally, fewer people are coming to eat. All we can do is wait for the gasoline to arrive."
Gasoline is expected to be delivered to the island on August 14th.
