Kyoto University Targets 2030 for iPS Cell Therapy to Combat Diabetes

KYOTO, Sep 03 (News On Japan) - Kyoto University Hospital has announced plans to start a clinical trial using iPS cells for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes as early as February next year.

This trial targets patients suffering from severe Type 1 diabetes, a condition where pancreatic cells fail to function properly, preventing the secretion of insulin needed to lower blood sugar levels.

In this trial, insulin-producing islet cells, created from iPS cells derived from healthy individuals, will be processed into sheet-like forms and transplanted into the patients' abdomens in multiple layers.

The treatment is expected to stabilize blood sugar levels without the need for multiple daily insulin injections.

The transplantation is planned for February next year, with the aim of achieving practical use by 2030.
